Become Part of a Japanese Family

Staying with a Japanese host family offers the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and practice what you’ve learned at school. When arranging your host family, we carefully consider your preferences, such as smoking habits, allergies, and language ability. Host families often become your closest companions, acting as guides, mentors, and friends throughout your time in Japan.

Comfort, Culture and Connection

To ensure a positive experience, we thoroughly screen all host family applicants, ensuring they provide a supportive environment for your learning and cultural exchange. You are guaranteed a private room, which may be either Japanese or Western style, and you will share common facilities such as the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry. During busy periods, like summer, you may be placed with other students, but we ensure that you still have a private room.

Homestay FAQs

Is there a curfew for homestays?

If you are over 20, there is generally no set curfew. However, it's important to inform your host family in advance if you plan to return late, ensuring you are considerate of their sleeping times. If you are a minor in Japan, you have a curfew of 10:00 PM. Please do not be late. Adhering to these guidelines helps maintain a respectful and harmonious relationship with your host family.

Can I stay with another person together at the same host family?

Yes, but only for the same gender, a married couple or relatives. As Japanese houses are small you both would have to stay in separate rooms. Even if a room share is possible, the price will still be the same.

Do I need to bring bedsheets and towels?

Bedsheets are provided, but you have to bring your own towels and toiletries (toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream, etc.) due to hygiene issues.

Can the host family provide vegetarian/vegan meals?

Vegetarian meals are possible, but vegan dietary not. If your diet is too strict, we highly recommend you arrange your own meals.

Can I choose the location of my homestay?

No, you will be placed in the most suitable host family according to your needs and the one that has availability during your study time.

When will I be informed about my host family?

Irrespective of how long in advance you have booked your course, we can only get a final confirmation of an available host family about 1 month before your course starts.

Can I have dinner with my host family, too?

Breakfast is included, yet dinner is not. This is only available for the half-board option and costs an additional ¥600 per day. Some host families might not be able to offer this option or just for certain days of the week. Please let us know when applying if this is a necessity and we will make sure to allocate you to a suitable family.

How do I handle language barriers?

Don't hesitate to use translation apps or ask for clarification when needed.  Another alternative is to enroll in our Japanese Online Lessons to equip you with the basics and you will also get a DISCOUNT on your in-person studies with us!

What about quiet times and noise levels in Japanese households?

Quiet times may vary depending on the family's occupation. Be conscious of noise levels, especially at night, to avoid disturbing your host family or neighbors. This includes moderating the volume when using electronic devices or engaging in activities.

Can I bring guests to my homestay?

No, in Japan, bringing friends to your family home is very uncommon. Especially for homestays, it is considered a safety concern by many host families. If you prefer more freedom, we recommend considering our other accommodation options.

What should I do if I have a problem with my host family?

If you experience an issue, please contact us first and then address it respectfully with your host family.
